PROPOSED FOUR YEAR STANDARD UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME IN SPECIAL EDUCATION/IGBO STUDIES
Brief History of the Department
The Department started as Harden College of Education in January 1961, with 41 students for a two-year Diploma programme in Education. In the 1962 session, the Department enrolled 40 students for the Bachelor’s Degree (B.A and B.Sc.) in Education. The students combined two teaching subjects with prescribed courses in Pedagogy. The title of the degree, B.A. or B.Sc. depended on whether the candidate studied an Art or Science subject. In the 1981/82 academic session, the Department of Education was restructured into one Department and two sub-departments namely: Department of Educational Foundations and Sub-Department of Arts Education and Science Education, respectively. The Department of Educational Foundations initially had two options: The Principles and Method option and The Guidance and Counseling option.
The Principles and Methods option died a natural death with the phasing out of Teacher Training Colleges. Only the Guidance and Counselling option is offered. Special Education courses have been offered from inception as courses required by some students in the Faculty. However, the current National Policy an Education’s emphasis on getting teachers trained to teach in an inclusive setting has therefore precipitated the need for the establishment of Special Education Programme in the Department
Philosophy
The bachelor’s degree programme in Special Education is designed to reflect the inclusion of children with special needs in regular classrooms in Nigeria. Highly organized approaches and techniques are used for the delivery of the training, with emphasis on individualized-application-based learning. The unique needs and learning style of the individual learners are of great emphasis. The programme also takes cognizance of the fact that all individuals (disability not withstanding) are entitled to the provision of a free and appropriate public education in an inclusive set up. This is in line with the National Policy on Education that emphasizes the integration of the individual into a sound and effective citizen and equal educational opportunities for all citizens of the nation at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels both inside and outside school system.
Objectives
The objectives of the programme are to:
· Produce teachers who can implement the national objectives of special education;
· Produce sensitive, knowledgeable and dedicated teachers who are committed to excellence;
· Train effective teachers who are caring; and with a strong sense of sensitivity and positive attitude to practice in the field
· Train teachers who can employ appropriate assessment, methodologies, and exhibit proficiency in integrative technology and programming of students with special needs.
· produce teachers who can use assistive technology in assisting children learn to read and write to the best of their abilities
· Produce teachers who can also teach students microeconomic theories in solving economic problems.
· Teach children to appreciate other cultures, people of other ethnic groups.
Scope
The scope of the programme covers the major areas of special needs education and they include: Foundation Courses, teaching subjects in Economics.

PROPOSED FOUR YEAR STANDARD UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME IN SPECIAL EDUCATION/SOCIAL STUDIES
Special Education courses, have been offered from inception as courses required by some students in the faculty. However, the current National policy an Education’s emphasis on getting teachers trained to teach in an inclusive setting has therefore precipitated the need for the establishment of Special Education Programme in the department.
· Produce teachers who can implement the national objectives of special education;
· Produce sensitive, knowledgeable and dedicated teachers who are committed to excellence;
· Train effective teachers who are caring; and with a strong sense of sensitivity and positive attitude to practice in the field
· Train teachers who can employ appropriate assessment, methodologies, and exhibit proficiency in integrative technology and programming of students with special needs.
· produce teachers who can use assistive technology in assisting children learn to read and write to the best of their abilities.
· Train teachers who can teach the Structural Characteristics of Man’s Place and the Nigeria social life and culture.
