BIOGRAPHIC OF PROFESSOR MICHAEL ESKAY
Professor Michael Eskay, Ph.D. is a Professor of Special Education in the Department of Special Needs Education, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). He is an accomplished teacher educator, administrator, researcher, and internationally recognized scholar whose academic and professional experiences span Africa, Europe, Australia, Canada, and the United States of America. Professor Eskay began his professional career as an elementary school teacher and counselor in Europe and the United States. Over the years, he has accumulated extensive experience in educational leadership and administration, serving in several strategic positions. He has held appointments as Dean of Kilmer School, Principal of Orr High School under the Chicago Board of Education, Associate Director of the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) Programme at the University of the Cumberlands, USA, and Programme Coordinator of the Special Education Programme at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He has also played significant roles in the development and implementation of educational programmes and has successfully collaborated in securing grants for schools and academic initiatives. His teaching experience extends across several institutions of higher learning, including Chicago State University, Illinois College, Western Washington University, Wayne State College, the University of the Cumberlands, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Academically, Professor Eskay holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Criminal Justice Education from Northeastern Illinois University, a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Special Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Cultural Special Education and Comparative Special Education from Loyola University, Chicago. In addition to his academic qualifications, he possesses teaching certifications in Special Education (Type 10) from the States of Illinois, Washington, and Massachusetts, as well as administrative (P–12) certifications from Illinois and Washington States. Professor Eskay has distinguished himself as a prolific scholar with a strong international reputation. He has authored and co-authored over ninety academic publications, including books, book chapters, and peer-reviewed journal articles. He has delivered numerous scholarly presentations at local, national, and international conferences and has served as a reviewer for various professional organizations. Furthermore, he maintains active membership in several professional associations dedicated to advancing educational research and practice.
His research interests are broad and interdisciplinary, with particular emphasis on rural special education, teacher quality, self-concept development among at-risk learners, African American and culturally diverse learners, special education policy, urban teacher preparation, culturally responsive teaching, multicultural special education, comparative international special education, special education law, and diversity in special education. Through his teaching, research, publications, and professional service, Professor Eskay continues to make significant contributions to the advancement of special education and inclusive educational practices both nationally and internationally.

Professor Victoria Chikodi Onu, born on 23rd November, 1961, in Lagos State, Nigeria, is a distinguished academic and a transformative force in education. With an illustrious career spanning over three decades, she has left an indelible mark on the field of education through her pioneering work in integrating creativity and critical thinking into educational practices. Professor Onu’s academic journey began at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where she earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees in Education. Her unwavering commitment to educational excellence and reform has established her as a leading voice in the promotion of inclusive and innovative learning environments.
Professor Onu’s research and teaching philosophy centers on infusing creativity and critical thinking into education. Her profound insights were eloquently presented during her 173rd Inaugural Lecture at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, on November 25, 2021. The lecture, titled “Infusing Critical and Creative Thinking Skills into the Nigerian Educational System: Implications for Raising a Re-Engineered Generation in a Competitive World,” introduced groundbreaking strategies aimed at revolutionizing the Nigerian educational system. Her visionary approach advocates for a re-engineered generation equipped with the skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly competitive global landscape. In August 2024, Professor Onu ascended to the role of the pioneer Head of the Department of Special Needs Education at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, following her tenure as the Unit Coordinator of Special Needs Education. This pivotal role has empowered her to spearhead significant advancements in inclusive education, shaping the department’s academic direction and fostering a more inclusive environment for students with diverse needs.
A prolific scholar, Professor Onu boasts an impressive portfolio of over 85 publications, including influential books, book chapters, and articles in high-impact journals. Her contributions to the field extend to her editorial roles, where she serves as the Editor for the International Journal of Studies in Education (IJOSE) and the Journal of Educational Foundations, and as the Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Youth Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Development (IJYEED-Journal). Her editorial stewardship has been instrumental in shaping contemporary discourse on educational practices and youth development. As a mentor, Professor Onu has guided over 50 students, encompassing Undergraduates, Masters, and Ph.D. candidates. As a Fulbright Scholar at Florida International University, USA (1997-1998), she engaged in cross-cultural educational initiatives and collaborated with esteemed institutions such as the Hafford Thinking and Creativity Center, USA, and Shalom Schools Ltd, Nigeria. Her work on educational programs for gifted learners and creative education has garnered international acclaim. She is the Founder of the Gifted, Talented, and Creative Children Association of Nigeria (GITCAN), an initiative dedicated to nurturing exceptional talent and fostering a supportive community for gifted children. Her professional affiliations reflect her commitment to advancing education and creativity. Professor Onu is an active member of the Fulbright Alumni Association of Nigeria (FAAN), the Home Economics Research Association of Nigeria (HERAN), and serves as the Director of the African Network on Creativity. She is married to Dr. Willy Onu, a fellow Christian from Ezimo in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State, Nigeria.
